What Internet Speed Do You Need for 4K Streaming?
Real bandwidth numbers for HD, Full HD and 4K streams, why your headline broadband speed isn't what your TV gets, and how to measure what actually matters.

The numbers

Two clarifications that matter:
- These are per stream. Two TVs and a tablet going at once need the sum, plus headroom for everything else in the house.
- "Comfortable" beats "minimum" because live streams have bitrate peaks — a fast football move or confetti scene demands far more bits than a static news desk. A connection that only just clears the average buffers exactly at the exciting moments.
Why your headline speed isn't what the TV gets
Your ISP sells the speed at the router. Your TV receives the speed after your home Wi-Fi has taken its cut, and that cut is brutal: walls, distance, microwave ovens, neighbours' networks and the 2.4 GHz band's congestion can turn 80 Mbps at the router into 12 Mbps at the TV.
This is why the only measurement that counts is a speed test run on the streaming device itself — the Firestick, the TV, the box. Not your phone stood next to it, which has a different radio.
The fixes, in order of effectiveness
- Ethernet. A cable from router to TV/box delivers the full rate, every time, forever. The end of most "mystery buffering". Full comparison in Wi-Fi vs Ethernet.
- 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Much faster than 2.4 GHz at short-to-medium range. Make sure the device is joined to the 5 GHz network, not just the house.
- Router placement. Out of the cupboard, off the floor, away from the fish tank. Genuinely.
- Mesh or a powerline adapter for big or awkward houses.

Do you need to upgrade your broadband?
Work it out honestly: count your household's simultaneous peak streams, multiply by the comfortable figure, add ~20 Mbps for everything else.
A couple watching one 4K stream: 50 + 20 = 70 Mbps — a standard fibre package. A family running two 4K TVs and gaming: 100 + 20 + gaming = ~150 Mbps. If your package already exceeds your number but streaming still struggles, the bottleneck is inside the house — fix the Wi-Fi before paying for faster broadband that the TV will never see.
