Wi-Fi vs Ethernet for Streaming
Why a cable beats wireless for the TV every time, what Wi-Fi actually loses in a real house, and the cheap ways to get wired when the router is in the wrong room.

Here's the uncomfortable truth behind most streaming complaints: the broadband is fine, and the last ten metres are the problem. Between your router and your TV, Wi-Fi quietly discards a fortune in bandwidth — and a £5 cable gets it all back.
What Wi-Fi actually loses
Wireless speed decays with distance, walls and interference. Typical real-house numbers from an 80 Mbps fibre connection:

Worse than the average is the variance: Wi-Fi speed fluctuates with the neighbours' networks, the microwave, and how many devices share the band. Streaming hates variance — that's the buffer wheel at the exciting bit. Ethernet delivers the full rate with essentially zero variance, every hour of every day.
What this means per quality tier
A 4K stream wants a sustained 35–50 Mbps (the numbers). Look at the table: two walls from the router, Wi-Fi is already marginal for 4K and merely adequate for Full HD. The same TV on a cable has headroom for everything.
Getting wired when the router's in the wrong room
The classic objection — "the router's in the hall, the TV's in the lounge" — has four answers, cheapest first:
- A long flat Ethernet cable (£10–15 for 10–20m) along the skirting. Unglamorous, bulletproof.
- Powerline adapters (£30–50/pair) run the network through your mains wiring: one plugs in by the router, one by the TV, Ethernet at both ends. Performance varies with house wiring but usually comfortably beats far-room Wi-Fi.
- Mesh Wi-Fi with a wired backhaul node near the TV — the node catches wireless close-up and feeds the TV via cable.
- Move the router — sometimes the answer really is that simple; ISPs fit them wherever the master socket happens to be, not where they work best.
Almost every streaming device takes a cable: Smart TVs and Formuler/MAG boxes have ports built in, Fire TV Cube likewise, and Firesticks accept a cheap Ethernet adapter. Only phones and tablets are stuck on wireless — and they're mobile by design.
When Wi-Fi is genuinely fine
Fairness section: a modern router in the same room or one wall away, on 5 GHz, with normal household load, streams 4K without complaint. If your speed test at the device comfortably clears your quality tier at peak time, you don't have a problem to fix.
