What an electronic programme guide is, where IPTV guide data comes from, why it sometimes goes blank or shows the wrong times, and how to keep it healthy.

The EPG — electronic programme guide — is the grid that shows what's on now and next across your channels. It's the difference between IPTV feeling like proper telly and feeling like a wall of unlabelled links. Understanding how it works makes its occasional quirks self-explanatory.
Where guide data comes from
Programme listings are compiled into a data feed (commonly XMLTV format) mapping each channel to its schedule: titles, times, descriptions. Your player app downloads this feed — separately from the channel list — and matches entries to channels by an ID.
Three facts fall out of this design:
- Channels and guide are independent. Channels can work perfectly while the guide is blank — the streams and the listings travel by different roads.
- The guide is a snapshot. Downloaded periodically, it ages between refreshes. Most apps re-fetch daily by default.
- Mapping matters. A channel shows guide data only if its ID matches an entry in the feed. One unmapped channel among hundreds of correct ones is a mapping gap — reportable and fixable on the service side.
How the login method affects it
With an Xtream Codes API login, guide data comes bundled — the app fetches it automatically alongside the channels. With a plain M3U playlist, the EPG usually needs its own URL configured separately, which is one of the main reasons we recommend the API method where the app offers it. The three classic EPG problems
Blank guide. The feed hasn't downloaded — force a refresh in the app's EPG settings. First-ever downloads are the slow ones; give it minutes, not seconds.
Everything shifted by an hour. Not the feed — your device's clock. Set the time zone to Europe/London (not a fixed GMT offset; the UK's summer-time switch is precisely the one-hour error people see) and enable automatic time.
Stale or patchy listings. Set the app's auto-update to daily, and refresh the playlist so channel-to-guide mappings are current.

Keeping it healthy

- After refreshing a playlist, expect the guide to lag a minute behind while it re-syncs.
